Długi, męczący lot i brak oczekiwań. Tylko garść informacji o historii tego trudnego miejsca i ogromna chęć zobaczenia wszystkiego na własne oczy. Podróż zaczynamy w Hawanie, potem kilka kluczowych punktów na wyspie. Komunizm w tropikach się nie udał. Człowiek potrzebuje wolności, by mógł być szczęśliwy i tworzyć lepszy świat.

Od razu rzuca się w oczy zaniedbanie, wszechobecny brak normalności, poczucie porzucenia i beznadziejnej pustki. Brakuje perspektyw. A jednak — jest w tym miejscu coś pięknego. Morze: wspaniałe, nieco groźne. Piękno przyrody. Mityczne już stare samochody dodają ulicom uroku i melancholii. Czuję się tu dobrze, bezpiecznie. Ale czy mam pomysł, jak to wszystko pokazać? Jak opowiedzieć, jak naprawdę wygląda ta wyspa? W kilku słowach — to niemożliwe.

Póki co tylko się ocieram — o miejsca, o sytuacje, o twarze. W biegu wyciągam aparat, zaglądam tu i tam, chłonę puste przestrzenie, cieszę się brakiem tego, co u nas występuje w nadmiarze. Uczę się patrzeć bez oczekiwań.

A long, exhausting flight — and no expectations. Just a handful of facts about the history of this difficult place, and a strong desire to see it all with my own eyes. The journey begins in Havana, then continues through several key points on the island. Communism in the tropics didn’t work out. People need freedom to be happy and to build a better world.

Neglect is immediately visible, a widespread absence of normality, a sense of abandonment and hopeless emptiness. There’s a lack of perspective. And yet — there is something beautiful here. The sea: magnificent, slightly threatening. The beauty of nature. The now-mythical old cars give the streets charm and melancholy. I feel good here. I feel safe. But do I know how to show all this? How to tell what the island really looks like? It's impossible to do in just a few words.

For now, I’m only brushing past it — the places, the situations, the faces. I pull out my camera on the go, peek here and there, soak in the empty spaces, and enjoy the absence of all the things that are in excess on our streets. I’m learning to look without expectations.
